Grosvenor Lodge

Can you imagine yourself in your own secluded, private fishing lodge? Historic Grosvenor Lodge, once the summer home of Alaska aviation pioneer Ray Petersen, is about as close as it gets!

This intimate, comfy retreat houses up to six people — think family, business associates or friends — in an exquisite, rustic setting between Lake Grosvenor and Lake Coville, where the narrows next to the lodge make for the finest Alaska fishing.

Our central location allows our guests to access other hot spots in the area via jet boat, and our knowledgeable guide will show you where to find rainbows, char, lake trout and pike. Added bonus: Two nearby rivers are regarded as two of the largest spawning streams for sockeye salmon in the Naknek drainage, receiving more than 100,000 salmon each year.

Grosvenor’s main Lodge has a cozy lounging area, bar, kitchen and a dining area with a stellar view of the lake. Four guests are considered a “full camp” but we can comfortably accommodate up to six when you book the entire lodge — Voila! You’re very own fishing hideaway!

The quaint but comfortable main lodge houses the lounging area and bar, where complimentary cocktails are served each evening. Many a fishing story has been told in this historic Pan Abode-style cabin which provides a relaxing place to unwind after an exciting day on the water.

The kitchen and dining area, where hearty Alaska fare is prepared each day features a stunning view across Grosvenor Lake. Despite our remote location, our lodge chef works closely with our reservations office in Anchorage to prepare delicious meals for our guests while also accommodating for individual food allergies and/or dietary restrictions.

Guests are accommodated in the three cozy guest cabins on-site, each of which have heat and electricity. All guest cabins include one twin-sized bed and a twin-sized bunk bed (three beds total in each cabin).

A recently renovated bathhouse is situated just steps away from our guest cabins and features two private restrooms (including showers) for guest use.

In the midst of Katmai National Park, Grosvenor Lodge is located at the confluence between two lakes, Lake Coville and Lake Grosvenor.

This confluence, referred to locally as “The Narrows” serves as a funnel for one of the largest runs of sockeye salmon in the world, which in turn provides forage to the area’s prolific populations of resident rainbow trout, lake trout, Arctic char, Northern Pike, and other species native to Bristol Bay. It is the perfect launch point for the wide variety of fishing opportunities Grosvenor Lodge has to offer.

Our season runs from approximately mid-June through September, and like most Alaska fisheries, what we fish for (and how we fish for them) is largely dependent on the time of year.

We fish both fly and conventional gear at Grosvenor depending on our guest’s preferences. However, its important to note that some (but not all) of the waters we frequent are restricted to fly fishing only. Interested in learning how to fly fish during your stay? We offer three, four, and seven-day trips to Grosvenor Lodge with transfer days every Wednesday and Sunday throughout our season.

Our base rates for the 2024 season are shown below. Included in these trips is lodging, meals, daily boat and guide service (guided fly outs not included), rod and wader rental, complimentary cocktails each evening, and all taxes and fees.

Katmailand, Inc. is authorized within Katmai National Park and Preserve to provide lodging, food, merchandise, and the tour services listed above.

Flights

Air transportation from Anchorage to Grosvenor Lodge is not included in the trip prices above.

However, we work with Katmai Air to arrange all of the air transportation needed to reach Grosvenor Lodge from Anchorage. For information on flights from Anchorage to Grosvenor, click the “Flights” tab above, or get in touch with one of our trip experts by clicking right here.

Grosvenor Lodge is located within Katmai National Park, a remote area of Alaska accessible primarily by air. The park is accessed almost exclusively via float plane service from King Salmon.

We work with our own Katmai Air to arrange all of the air transportation needed to reach Grosvenor from Anchorage.

Guests traveling to Grosvenor through Katmai Air will fly from our office in Anchorage to our sister lodge, Kulik Lodge, aboard our pressurized Pilatus PC-12 aircraft (approx. 1 hour). Upon landing at Kulik, you will be taken to your float plane (following a quick bathroom break) for a scenic flight (approx. 20 minutes) to Grosvenor.

The atmosphere at the lodge is casual, so comfortable medium-weight clothes are the normal attire. While on the water, we recommend that you dress in layers to best regulate your body temperature. Expect temperatures in July and August to range from 45 – 75 F with lower temperatures possible in June and September.

The baggage weight allowance is 50 lbs. per guest. Your clothing and gear should fit into at least two small soft-sided bags and a rod case. Any excess baggage may have to be flown in at a later time on a space available basis. Storage is available at the office in Anchorage for items not required at the lodge.

Essentials

High quality rain gear, a warm sweater or jacket, long-sleeved shirts, warm socks, fleece pants, and polypropylene or merino wool underwear (for use under your waders) is highly recommended. Cool morning boat rides and cool/wet fishing days require warm hats and finger-less gloves.

Dry storage is also limited on our boats, so we recommend a waterproof ‘dry bag’ to store extra layers, camera equipment, and other items that you don’t want getting wet while on the water.

Comfortable walking shoes or boots for wearing around the camp is also recommended. A waterproof pair is ideal.

Guests should also bring their toiletries and other personal items. However, bedding and towels are supplied at the lodge for guest use.

Fishing Gear

Anglers will need line clippers, needle-nosed pliers, insect repellent, sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses. You can bring your own or purchase these items, along with various souvenirs, shirts, and hats in the small fly shop at the lodge.

Fly Fishing

• Fly Rods and Reels. We recommend a 6-7 weight fly rod to get the most sport from our resident rainbow trout, Arctic char and lake trout. For Salmon and Pike, we recommend a heavier rod in the 7-8 weight range. Reels do not need to be the most expensive, but we recommend those with a reliable drag system. Sage 7 weight rods and Ross Reels are available for guest use at the lodge.
• Fly Lines. For those bringing their own gear, we recommend both a floating and a fast sink-tip line rigged with enough backing to fill the spool.
• Leader and Tippet. We typically use 8 lb. test tippet material for most applications. A common exception is when dry fly fishing, in which case we often use a 7 1/2 to 9 ft. tapered leader with 3x – 4x tippet. A selection of 6 through 12lb test tippet should cover the majority of situations.
• Flies. Fly selection generally depends on timing.

Conventional Fishing

Conventional anglers should pack their favorite light or medium action rods and a good quality reel spooled with at least 8 lb test line. Expect to lose tackle to snags! We recommend bringing plenty of large spoons and spinners and extra terminal tackle (including swivels). Almost any color combo will work, but we find silver and orange to be the most consistent producers.

Please note that only single hooks are permitted. All treble hooks must be replaced with singles or trimmed down to one hook. Also keep in mind that American Creek, one of our main fishing destinations is designated as fly fishing only by Katmai National Park regulations.

Waders

We offer waders and boots for our guests to use during their stay. You can save some weight and bulk when packing by using our waders and/or boots.

Some folks prefer their own waders and boots, however please note that felt soled boots are no longer allowed in Alaska. Boots with metal cleats are also not allowed at our lodges. A common compromise from our guests is to bring their own waders but use a pair of our wading boots during their stay.

Those interested in using loaner waders must pick them up at Kulik Lodge before your flight over to Grosvenor.

What Not to Bring

Please do not bring sleeping bags, towels, nylon landing nets, gaffs, creels, or any type of firearm. If you do bring bear mace, be sure to inform you pilot as it can’t be packed inside the planes. We do not recommend bringing bear mace.
